DHA DOCUMENTS
Unabridged Birth Certificates, Letters of No Impediment, Confirmation of Marriage- Applied for, tracked and delivered, wherever you are.
Home Affairs documents are the foundation of nearly every visa, marriage and emigration file. They are also among the slowest to get. GetCleared handles the application, follows it up and, when you need it for use abroad, takes the finished document straight through to a DIRCO apostille.
Which Home Affairs documents do we handle?
1. Unabridged birth certificate
What it is: The full version of your birth certificate. It records both parents' details, and it is what most foreign authorities mean when they ask for a "full" or "long-form" birth certificate. The short, abridged version most people carry is usually not accepted.
Typically needed for:
-
Visa and residency applications (spouse, work, study, ancestry)
-
Citizenship by descent
-
Marriage abroad
-
School or university enrolment overseas
-
Applications for a child's passport or visa
Good to know: If you were born long ago, or your record is on an older register, retrieval can take longer. Tell us when and where you were born and we will advise on the likely route. If the receiving country needs the document for official use abroad, we can have it apostilled next.
2. Letter of No Impediment (Certificate of No Impediment)
What it is: An official letter from the Department of Home Affairs confirming that no marriage is recorded against your name, so you are free to marry. Foreign authorities ask for it when a South African wants to marry abroad. It also appears under names such as Certificate of Freedom to Marry, Single Status Letter, Statement of Non-Impediment or Affidavit of Marital Status.
Typically needed for:
-
Getting married in another country
-
Registering a marriage abroad
-
Some visa and residency applications based on a relationship
Good to know:
-
It is usually valid for a limited period, often around 6 months, and some countries want it more recent. Time it to your wedding or filing date.
-
If you have been married before, you will normally need to supply the divorce order (or a death certificate for a previous spouse) as well.
-
Most foreign authorities want it apostilled by DIRCO. We take care of this.
-
Check your marital status record before you apply. Identity fraud and incorrect records do happen, and it is better to find out first than after a rejection.
3. Confirmation of marriage / marital status
What it is: A document from Home Affairs that confirms your marital status on the national population register: whether you are single, married, divorced or widowed. It is the reverse side of the Letter of No Impediment, and is often used to prove a marriage, check your record or support a visa file.
Typically needed for:
-
Spousal visas and residency
-
Proving your marital status to an embassy, bank or employer
-
Estate, property and divorce matters
